In June 2020, 20 Indian soldiers were killed in hand-to-hand fighting with Chinese troops in the western Himalayan region of Ladakh, the deadliest confrontation between the nuclear-armed neighbours in decades.

Initially from New Delhi, and then from Ladakh, I helped cover the story, relying on a mix of hand-outs, diplomatic statements, and military, government and intelligence sources.
